If you want a pet camera in a room where humans also sleep, change, or work from home, the shutter is the feature that makes it comfortable. If the camera goes in a room where privacy is not a concern, cheaper options do the same job.

What tends to help

The physical shutter slides closed to block the lens completely — no software trust required. When open, the camera provides 1080p video, night vision, motion detection, and two-way audio through the Arlo app. The wide-angle lens covers most rooms from a shelf or wall mount. If you later add Arlo outdoor cameras, they all live in the same app and ecosystem.

A straight answer: Extended cloud history and smart detection features require an Arlo Secure subscription. Without it, you get live view and basic alerts. The subscription adds up if you run multiple Arlo cameras.
