The problem

You are doing a three-hour trail walk and carrying water, bags, and treats for a dog that is trotting along unburdened. A healthy adult dog can share the load, but an unbalanced or oversized pack shifts weight onto the shoulders and turns a hike into a chore. If your dog is still growing, recovering from injury, or over eight, a loaded pack is a vet conversation, not a purchase.

What tends to help

The DayPak uses two symmetrical saddlebags attached to a padded chest harness, distributing weight evenly across both flanks. Compression straps pull the load tight against the body so nothing swings on descents. What most buyers do not expect: the pack doubles as a basic harness even when the panniers are empty, so you can clip a lead directly to the D-ring.

A straight answer: Total pack weight — including the empty pack itself — should stay under 10 to 15 per cent of your dog's body weight. Overloading is the most common mistake.
